How Bonneville Is Tapping Demand Response to Balance Power From Dams, Wind and Sun

Pacific Northwest power agency enlists AutoGrid to integrate demand-side assets in grid balancing

Jun 18, 2015 – By Jeff St. John

BonnevilleDam_XL_310_206

The Bonneville Power Administration may have an enviable grid system, with the country’s largest hydropower resources providing the Pacific Northwest region with cheap and plentiful electricity.

But that doesn’t mean the federal power agency isn’t facing challenges.

Saving the Columbia River system’s salmon stocks has placed severe constraints on how dams can be tapped as flexible power resources. Meanwhile, Bonneville is balancing about 4,700 megawatts of intermittent wind power in its system, and it has ...

How Long Until Tech Firms Have More Home Energy Data Than Utilities Do?

Utilities could face a “use it or lose it” dilemma with their data.

February 11, 2015

By Jeff St. John

Utilities have a lock on the energy data coming from their customers — at least for now. But if they don’t start putting that data to use soon, they may find that they’ve been overtaken by tech firms.

That’s the view that emerged last week during a DistribuTECH panel I moderated on the subject of how new software tools could revolutionize demand response. The panel featured plenty of audience commentary on how much they’d like to get access to utility data to help them ...

Direct Load Control and Dynamic Pricing Programs, DR Markets,

November 2014
Residential demand response (DR) is a relatively old concept that harkens back to the 1970s, when it was first employed in the United States. At that time, DR was implemented as a component of the energy conservation focus of demand-side management (DSM) programs to encourage consumers to use less electricity during peak hours or to shift their energy use to off-peak times. Utilities have run residential direct load control (DLC) programs as forms of demand management for many ...

October 21, 2014

“We’re a superpower, but we have a third world grid,” said Bill Richardson, Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Energy in the wake of the Northeast Blackout of 2003. Richardson wanted more transmission lines and stricter national reliability standards to avoid another massive power outage. However, it turned out that the blackout, which was caused by an overloaded transmission line in Ohio sagging into the branches of a tree, could have been contained locally, but for a bug in the software on the local distribution system. In the decade since Richardson spoke, we have learned that software can do a ...

How Data will Power the Future of Energy – Guest Article by AutoGrid CEO Dr. Amit Narayan (World Economic Forum)

Throughout history, we’ve equated energy with the consumption of natural resources such as oil, natural gas or coal.

In the coming decades we will start to think of data and software as a source of energy.

What do I mean by that? Software won’t generate electrons, but it will let us leverage the electricity we are already generating in a more efficient and productive way.

Instead of building new power plants, we will take advantage of the search engine-like analytics of software-based controls to lower emissions and reduce costs. In other words, data will enable us to use power wisely and ...

Demand response (DR) has been a slow-evolving staple of the electricity sector for more than three decades. Today, it is deployed in emergency conditions when generation is insufficient to meet demand, as well as in situations where high demand causes a temporary spike in wholesale prices. In this manner, DR helps to maintain grid stability while avoiding some types of infrastructure costs.

However, GTM Research forecasts that the next ten years will look quite different for the sector, as increased innovation leads to price reductions in sensor technology and automation, and as adoption of distributed energy resources presents new ...

Making the Connection to Residential Users (Schneider Electric)

Demand response can involve a utility actively managing residential users’ energy consumption. This requires more infrastructure than just a smart thermostat.

July 23, 2014

As more Wiser home energy management systems are installed in individual residences, each of these represents a point that the utility can now talk to. Utilities can also talk to the thousands of sensors installed on pole transformers, substations, and all around the grid. That can quickly add up to be hundreds of thousands of devices creating enormous amounts of data. How does all that communication and data collection happen?
