Beyond Hardware: Why ARPA-E Sees Big Potential in Software Analytics for the Grid (GreenTech Media)

September 18, 2014

ARPA-E, the government’s energy research agency, backs a lot of complex projects. But its mission is very simple: find and support groundbreaking technologies that could have a transformative impact on the energy sector at scale.

Traditionally, the agency has been focused on capital- or materials-intensive solutions like battery storage, fuel cells, biofuels, electric motors and power electronics. But in recent years, ARPA-E has ramped up its support for companies and university research teams that are developing software analytics for the transmission and distribution grids.

“A couple of years ago, we asked what happens if that doesn’t come true,” said ARPA-E Program ...

ARPA-E Project Takes an Innovative Approach to the Electrical Grid (energy.gov)

With support from ARPA-E, AutoGrid Systems developed software to monitor the flow of power through the electric grid and help utilities better meet real-time electricity demands.

September 10, 2014

What if consumers were empowered with real-time data on the cost and efficiency of their energy use? During times of peak demand — such as on a hot summer afternoon when homes and businesses crank up their air conditioning — utilities could let cost-conscious consumers know how much they’re spending on energy or ask environmentally minded consumers to voluntarily reduce their energy footprint. Utilities would then be better positioned to quickly and efficiently ...

How will we power the next energy revolution? (World Economic Forum)

September 8, 2014

The energy industry is on the cusp of a seismic shift, not simply in terms of the type of energy society will become dependent upon as the century progresses, but who controls it, too.
It could be the biggest transformation in the market since the Industrial Revolution, except this time control won’t necessarily be in the hands of nations and corporations, but of the consumer. Or, as some have termed them, prosumers – people who don’t just consume power but produce it too.

Some experts believe that by using the extraordinary technology that is dominating every aspect of our ...
