Instead of the sweeping overhaul first envisioned, today’s smart city initiatives are evolving on a far more modest scale.
IBM got the ball rolling a decade ago when it began suggesting that emerging technologies could dramatically change the way cities served their populations. A new wave of sensors, meters, data collection and data processing tools: All these would come together to radically change the urban landscape, to create what came to be known as the “smart city.”
It was a grand vision, a sweeping ambition. “From a technology perspective it was about everything being interconnected and intelligent,” said Jennifer Belissent, principal analyst ...

As more renewable energy sources come online, energy storage has grown in importance, especially when the sun sets each day and the wind stops blowing. Predictive analytics and control software are now being applied to the problem of energy storage as a way to monitor and control demand spikes and connect storage systems to the emerging smart grid.
The latest example comes from AutoGrid Systems Calif., the developer of an “energy data platform” that uses smart meter, sensor and other utility data to generate a real-time assessment of energy consumption and recommendations for efficient power distribution. AutoGrid, Redwood City, Calif., announced ...
Back in the old days, the electric grid was pretty straight-forward. Power plants generated electricity and sent it over wires to homes and businesses. Then came the energy internet of things.
The things — such as solar panels, learning thermostats, electric vehicles, energy storage and even human idiosyncrasy – add tremendous complexity.
To say energy management has become like herding cats understates the consequences. It’s more like herding lions with failure meaning danger to electric reliability.
Software company AutoGrid is demonstrating a way to keep the lions heading the right way – indeed to negotiate a path that uses the energy internet ...
Seismic shifts are taking place in power markets and industry in the U.S., E.U. and around the world. Faced with policy and regulatory reforms that call on them to rapidly and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, power utilities are also being challenged to keep up with rapid advances, sharply falling costs and growth in use of renewable energy and smart grid technologies. Recognizing the “writing on the wall,” they’re turning to the latest information and communications technologies (ICT) in a bid to maintain their position at the apex of the power industry pyramid. Such efforts place strictly regulated, conservatively run ...

Utilities could face a “use it or lose it” dilemma with their data.
February 11, 2015
By Jeff St. John
Utilities have a lock on the energy data coming from their customers — at least for now. But if they don’t start putting that data to use soon, they may find that they’ve been overtaken by tech firms.
That’s the view that emerged last week during a DistribuTECH panel I moderated on the subject of how new software tools could revolutionize demand response. The panel featured plenty of audience commentary on how much they’d like to get access to utility data to help them ...
