Direct Load Control and Dynamic Pricing Programs, DR Markets, and DR Management Systems for Residential Customers: Global Market Analysis and Forecasts
Residential demand response (DR) is a relatively old concept that harkens back to the 1970s, when it was first employed in the United States. At that time, DR was implemented as a component of the energy conservation focus of demand-side management (DSM) programs to encourage consumers to use less electricity during peak hours or to shift their energy use to off-peak times. Utilities have run residential direct load control (DLC) programs as forms of demand management for many ...
A lot of things have changed. It used to be that utilities talked about outages and reliability. Now they talk about branding and social media—and outages and reliability. OK. So maybe we haven’t totally changed. There’s certainly been evolution, but there’s also a solid base underneath all that new growth.
So, we knocked on a few doors and asked about the solid base – the industry a-ha moments that defined the last century. What are the biggest, most powerful elements in the equation? See if you agree with the answers.

“We’re a superpower, but we have a third world grid,” said Bill Richardson, Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Energy in the wake of the Northeast Blackout of 2003. Richardson wanted more transmission lines and stricter national reliability standards to avoid another massive power outage. However, it turned out that the blackout, which was caused by an overloaded transmission line in Ohio sagging into the branches of a tree, could have been contained locally, but for a bug in the software on the local distribution system. In the decade since Richardson spoke, we have learned that software can do a ...

How Data will Power the Future of Energy – Guest Article by AutoGrid CEO Dr. Amit Narayan (World Economic Forum)
September 23, 2014
Throughout history, we’ve equated energy with the consumption of natural resources such as oil, natural gas or coal.
In the coming decades we will start to think of data and software as a source of energy.
What do I mean by that? Software won’t generate electrons, but it will let us leverage the electricity we are already generating in a more efficient and productive way.
Instead of building new power plants, we will take advantage of the search engine-like analytics of software-based controls to lower emissions and reduce costs. In other words, data will enable us to use power wisely and ...
